A lot of small businesses in Shrewsbury assume a website is either too expensive or just not worth it. I hear it all the time. When you’re running things on your own, every pound matters and anything that feels like a luxury gets pushed to the bottom of the list.
Over the past few months I’ve launched several new websites for local businesses that had never had one before, and the reaction is almost always the same: they wish they’d done it sooner. Two of those are one-page websites, which is often the sweet spot for smaller businesses. Simple, professional, and more affordable than most people expect.
Right now I’m offering a one-page website with six sections for just £400, usually £600 — more on that below.
I’m David, a freelance graphic designer and web designer based in Shrewsbury. Through Studio Payne I’ve spent years working with small businesses across Shropshire on everything from logos and print to websites that actually work. I’m not an agency — just one person who cares about getting things right, which tends to suit small businesses well. Take a look at my portfolio to get a feel for the kind of work I do.
No website? Not anymore: Website design for a hair salon in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury
Jenna at Sargeants Hair Salon has been cutting my hair for years. I’d already done her logo, appointment cards and various bits of print, so I knew her business well. When I asked whether she’d ever thought about a website, her answer was pretty much what I expected: she didn’t think she needed one and it was an expense she couldn’t justify.
I talked her through the one-page option. No bloated build, no content to manage — just a clean, professional presence that tells people who she is, where she is and how to book. Her salon sits on Abbey Foregate in the heart of Shrewsbury, and for a local business like hers, being findable online really does make a difference.
“Studio Payne have done our logo design, signage, printing, and now our website too. Everything has been spot on and really helped our business look professional. If you need a graphic designer in Shrewsbury, I’d recommend David every time.” — Jenna, Sargeants Hair Salon

From DIY to done right: One-page web design for a Shrewsbury make-up artist
Tanya at MiTime Beauty is based in Hanwood, just outside Shrewsbury, and covers clients across Shropshire. She’d been putting off getting a website, had a go at building one herself, but wasn’t happy with how it looked and wanted something more polished.
The one-page option was the answer. Affordable, quick to turn around and built properly from the start.
While sorting the technical setup I also noticed she’d been placed on one of Google’s higher-tier email plans — something Google quietly pushes during sign-up without making the lower options obvious. A quick change saves her over £200 a year. Small things like that matter when you’re running a business solo.
“I’m so happy with my new website! David made the whole process super simple and professional. If you need a website designer in Shrewsbury who really gets your business, Studio Payne is the one!” — Tanya, MiTime Beauty

Launching Callaghan Stoneworks: A multi-page website, for a Shropshire stonemason
Simon at Callaghan Stoneworks reached out to me when he was setting up his business. He’s based in Shrewsbury but works across Shropshire and the surrounding areas, specialising in heritage stone masonry. His portfolio includes work at Copthorne in Shrewsbury, the village church at Llanyblodwell, Gobowen train station and the Cambrian Heritage Railway in Oswestry.
For Simon, a one-pager wasn’t going to cut it. He needed to establish himself properly and show the quality of his craftsmanship to clients who care about that level of detail. We built a multi-page site with dedicated services pages, high attention to detail in the design, and a video hero section that makes an immediate impression.
The work speaks for itself. The website just needed to let it.

Does a small business actually need a website?
Plenty of businesses do fine without one, and I won’t pretend otherwise. Word of mouth is powerful, especially somewhere like Shrewsbury.
But a website is working for you around the clock. It builds trust before someone picks up the phone, tells people what you do and where you’re based, and for local search it can make a real difference to how you show up on Google. It’s not about replacing the way you already win business. It’s about making sure you don’t lose any either.
Why not just build my own website?
You can, and some DIY websites are perfectly decent. But it takes more time than most people expect, and the result usually doesn’t look or work as well as something built by someone who does this every day.
It’s also easy to miss the things that matter most: clear calls to action, a logical flow, contact forms that actually work. On the technical side, SEO setup and email configuration are often overlooked entirely on DIY builds. If your time is better spent running your business, it probably is.
Can I afford a professional website?
Go to a large agency and yes, you can pay thousands. But for most small businesses that level of investment simply isn’t necessary. Working with a small studio or freelancer is a much more affordable route, and you still get something properly built and professionally designed. At Studio Payne, websites start from £400 with hosting from just £15 a month.
How much does a website cost in Shropshire?
It varies enormously depending on who you work with and what you need. A large agency might charge anywhere from £2,000 to £10,000 or more for a small business website. A freelancer or small studio is typically much more affordable, with one-page websites usually starting from around £600 and multi-page builds ranging from £800 upwards depending on complexity.
What you’re really paying for is time, expertise and attention to detail. A cheaper DIY build might seem like a saving, but if it takes you 20 hours to put together something you’re not even happy with, it probably wasn’t. A professionally built website done once, done properly, tends to be the better investment.
How long does it take to build a website?
For a one-page website, once we’ve agreed on the content and direction, I can typically turn it around within one to two weeks. A larger multi-page build like Callaghan Stoneworks naturally takes a bit longer, usually two to four weeks, depending on how much content needs to go in and how quickly we can go back and forth on revisions.
The biggest factor in timing is usually content — knowing what you want to say, having photos ready, that kind of thing. The clearer you are going in, the faster it moves.
